palestinian factions engaged in this military operation with israel. they're trying to get them to commit to a cessation of hostility force a period of 48 hours to allow for a longer truce to go into effect. the palestinians feel they have the upper hand here, and they are saying they will not stop their attacks into southern israel so long as israel maintains a siege on gaza. they want it lifted and they want guaranteed backed by the international community that israel will no longer engage and target and kill senior leaders of the palestinian factions here in gaza. they want all of these demands guaranteed by the international community. for its part israel wants to approach it from a different angle. they want a complete cessation of hostilities for 38 hours for so followed by a -- other concerns they have. the challenge for egypt is to try and close that gap as quickly as possible because essentially everyone here feels that they're running out of time. you have the israelis amassed on the border and palestinian factions still firing rockets and caught in the middle are the 19.6 milli

that leave the quest for peace? ♪ >> jennifer: leaders from israel and gaza met in egypt today to discuss a possible drawdown with u.s. secretary general. for now, though the fighting continues. israeli air strikes killed nearly 40 people today, groups in gaza respondented by shooting nearly 100 rockets in israel. and on the israeli side of the border things appeared remarkably calm today. this picture has caused a stir online. it shows israelis watching passively as in-coming missiles sail over head. so why to israelis feel so comfortable out in the open as missiles fly above them? because of something called the iron dome. it's a defense system that uses radar to detect in-coming rockets and determine where they will land. if it is headed towards a populated area the gunner shoots the missile out of the sky. it is particularly good at detecting the smaller, older rockets that the palestinians use. iron dome has had an incredible 85% successful rate against the 300 rockets the palestinians have fired. the gulf missiles intercepted less than 10% of their target. iro

are continuing tod today. they also are continue to attack rocket stockpiles from gaza. israel's goal, of course, is to stop, to prevent hamas from attacking israeli citizens with its rockets. there have been about 850 attacks this year, 100 in the last week alone, so that's what israel wants stop. at the same time, hamas has been retaliating today. at least 130 rockets fired from gaza into israeli cities. about 50 of those rockets were intercepted by israel's homemade antimissile defense system, the iron dome, but one did get through. it hit the israeli town and killed three israeli citizens, and now israel is using that, of course, to threaten more attacks. the southern commander of the israeli army said that the assassination yesterday of ahmed jabbaarie, which kicked all this off, the militant leader, he says is just the beginning. meanwhile, israeli troops are gathering on the edge of gaza. tanks have been reported moving south. a ground invasion is possible. it's definitely not what israel wants, but israel's defense minister ehud barak said this morning that israel would do anything, and

on the gaza border. leland vittert has the latest. leland? >> reporter: chris, israel is very much a country on the brink of war. we have seen hundreds, if not thousands of tanks and personally carriers, ready to push into the gaza strip, in a moment's notice, because the airstrike simply did not stop the rockets flying outf gaza, towards israel. and the iron dome intercepted a number of those rockets today. however, about 8 or 10 got through, causing a half dozen injuries inside of southern israel. and, for the israelis, the airstrikes continued pounding away, day five of hitting the gaza strip, so far the airstrikes killed 50-plus people, half of them civilians, including a number of children and the air forces hit almost a thousand targets, and, leveled much of hamas's infrastructure, inside of the gaza strip. as for the ground war, which certainly caused more civilian casualties, a major escalation. israel called up 30,000 reservists and they are on the borders now, infantry and their tanks, simply waiting for the "go" order to head in and the israeli prime minister is willing to escalat

. martin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. israel's army warned of dangerous days ahead. difficult days ahead. and they're already difficult enough. today israel is continuing its attacks on gaza, still targeting hamas militant leaders and in particular over the last 12, 16 hours attacking stockpiles of long range rockets that hamas has been building up in gaza. that's what israel says this is tack is all about. stopping hamas from the ability to attack israel with the rockets. they say they destroyed many of the long range rockets which can target cities as far north as tel aviv. there is one report from gaza that the palestinians had fired a rocket at tel aviv but there is no confirmation of that. there was no news of it landing. one missile did get to the anti-rocket defense system and killed three israelis who apparently did not obey instructions to seek shelter but were looking at the action from their balcony. the army is telling everybody in israel, do what you're told and then you'll stay safe. inside gaza, at least 13 palestinians have been killed, 100 wounded.
